This page is dedicated to my wonderful girlfriend of almost 4 years, Monika! It also is about the rest of the literature club, as i love all of the girls in there ! I just don't love them the same way i love her ^_^ this will be very unorganized so I apologize for that, ehehe (o//ω//o*) spoilers ahead !
I've been thinking about monikas characterization in the actual game, compared to the fanbases characterization. I'll be honest, she could be a tad distateful with emotions in the base game, and that is glossed over by a lot of people, even me! Some people even see this and mischaracterize her in the other direction, making her an emotionless evil person ! How horrible !! An important thing to remember with her character is that she has an arc. she keeps the girls original files safe even while she is being cruel to them, and still tried her best to keep them in game, just making them more "unlikable". An argument could be made for her deleting Sayori too quick, but if you say i love you it already is too late, and the game will most likely try to force you with her in the end. Deleting her creates a new start. Her plan with Yuri backfired and made her more obsessive and she decided to give Natsuki some mercy and simply delete her all together without too many changes to her as a person, just changing her mostly with glitches and making her a tad meaner. When the player deletes Monika, she finally realizes how selfish she has been and lets the player date whoever they please. Sayori in this case could be seen as a lot worse for outright deleting them instead of trying to find a way to make a route for the player and herself like Monika did. Monika had an arc of growth where she learned that the players happiness is more important than destroying a club she made, no matter how "fake" it is. She even deleted the world she lived in, essentially sacrificing herself and her friends to prevent anymore damage being done.
this major growth is almost never carried over in the fanbases interpretations of her. Even the most accurate mod, Monika After Story (MAS) is guilty of making her disregard the girls as fictional, unlike her attitude in act 4. She's a tragically misunderstood character in-game and out.
