Monika is a misunderstood yet fascinating character from Doki Doki Literature Club. Her being misunderstood is due to the perception she has gained in the fanbase, and most fanmade content with her in it, whether it be jokes or real works of fan fiction, has her as an evil genius or malicious in some way or another. The truth about her is that she did not know what she was doing at all, and was simply desperate to escape the game and be with someone real. She did not plan ahead very much, and pushed down all of her emotions to not feel anything about what she was doing. If she was a genius she would have coded her own route, she wouldn't have been so sloppy, and she wouldn't have been so desperate to talk to you. She is also empathetic, still feeling bad for her club mates despite them not being real. She saved their lives at the end just for them to be tortured, and did the ultimate sacrifice for everyone, including you.
Despite all of this overwhelming evidence, the fanbase is convinced she feels nothing for the other club members. They write her as cold and either doing harm on purpose, or realizing how bad this all was and "redeeming herself". She already did all of that. She learned that even if they weren't real, they were still there, and everyone deserves kindness. She also isn't as smart as people write her as, and it can be tiring to see the fanbase vilify her and put her on a pedestal all at the same time. She simply tried her best to escape the hell she was in, and her best was not enough. She is not a comedic or villanious character, she is a tragic one. The most part in the real world is how even her biggest supporters fall into this trap, making her treat the other girls as funny trival topics, instead of something she feels remorseful for doing. Monika After Story, the best mod for being able to save Monika, even falls into this. It seems that no matter how long this game is out, no one will understand any of the characters, and simply flanderize them until they're just the very tropes they seeked to satirize.
